1954 Eltham Processing Centre, Pasteurising Plant. Anne Pordage comments (on Francis Frith website) "My dad worked at the Express Dairy bottling depot opposite side of the road to the church. I often went to watch and be treated to a drink in their canteen, as a child I found it fascinating watching the bottles being cleaned and refilled with milk. Unfortunately, it was closed and moved to Morden in Surrey so Dad had to travel there everyday on his motorbike!" (Express Salesman's Manual Fourth Edition)

1954 Corry Mann Experiment results. Harold Corry Mann was employed by the Medical Research Council, organised this study, which was published in 1926 'Diets for boys during the school age' The study involved groups of boys aged between 6 and 12 years of age, for periods up to three years. They lived in Barnardo’s “colony of boys” at Woodford, Essex, which provided full-time care for those in need. The colony was a self-contained “model village”, with its own school, hospital, farm, swimming pool, bakery and disinfecting plant. The 500 to 600 resident boys lived in houses, each of which had about 30 residents. They ate their meals communally in a large dining hall, although, when outbreaks of infectious disease occurred, houses could be isolated and managed individually by house-matrons using their own kitchens. Boys were selected for the experiment according to age (7 to 11) and weight (45 to 65 lbs), but were excluded if they were “of colour or of foreign, Latin, Scandinavian, or Hebrew type..”, or if they had obvious disease. The boys were “rated” on height and weight according to a scale of “A1 to B3”. (Express Salesman's Manual Fourth Edition)
