1933 Direct Farm Supply Tank AGX 855, Fleet: 126. Allan Bedford comments "This magnificent, AEC Mammoth Major, chassis no 668173, was new in March 1933, as fleet no 126, AGX 855. The tank was built by Hopkins and the streamlined cab by Butterfields, at a total cost of £2,579. The valancing on the tank added approximately 3cwt to the total ULW of 7.2.5. Whether this remained intact during its 13-year service life is doubtful. The vehicle appears to have retained its petrol engine to the end and, on its last thorough overhaul in June 1943, a total of £825 was spent. Passing to T&F Motors in July 1946, it realised £600." In 1983, it purchased Duple Coachbuilders, closing its fire engineering division with the requirements contracted by Simon Carmichael International Group Ltd SIG, also creating John Dennis Trainbuilders. In 1989, with the purchase of the Hestair Specialist Vehicles Ltd business by Trinity Holdings, it was renamed Dennis Group. In 1992, Reliance-Mercury was acquired, in 1995, the cargo handling division of ML Holdings: Douglas Equipment Limited and Schopf Maschinenbau GmbH and Trinity was acquired by Mayflower Corporation in 1998 with Dennis Eagle being spun off and sold to NatWest Equity Partners as well as FL Douglas and Schopf and with the formation of the TransBus International joint venture founded by Mayflower with the Henlys Group which became Plaxton Holdings Limited and insolvent in 2004 the company became Alexander Dennis Limited ADL which in 2019 was acquired by the Canadian bus manufacturer New Flyer, which then became the NFI Group." 1948 This wonderful piece of artwork is taken from a lavish catalogue produced by WP Butterfield Ltd, of Shipley and, although the Mammoth Major illustrated was delivered in September 1947, other vehicles depicted dated from six years later. Fleet no 928, JXN 492, on chassis no 0386846, was supplied at a cost of £2,346, the Duramin cab came to £211 and the 3,000-gallon tank, £1,210. Thanks to a very helpful clerk with his fountain pen, we know that the vehicle entered service on the 12/4/48, at the dairy in Leyburn in the Yorkshire Dales. This first opened in 1937, with the milk sent by direct rail link for bottling at Cricklewood. The chassis-cab was sold to Hamptons of Fenstanton in February 1957, for £1,200. David Atkinson adds "Think that looks like Jack Turnbull on top of the tank so therefore it will be Appleby!". Fiona Egglestone confirms. The caption on the article reads "This vehicle is a typical example of the general bulk liquid carrier's need for the biggest possible payload. It carries 5,000gal of milk in three compartments (two of 2,250gal and one of 500gal) and is constructed from EN58B quality stainless steel. The running gear is a Northern Trailer Co.
