1972 Elsie Bedford and Rose Baker from Upper Norwood at London Merit and Service Dinner. Hilary Bowyer comments "How great for me to see these two clerks. I was an Area Clerical Supervisor when I met Elsie at Gypsy Hill. A really cheerful person and always smiling. It was known to be advisable never to book a holiday the same time as she took hers as it ALWAYS RAINED whenever she went on holiday - never failed! I knew Rose from childhood as she started working for my father where we processed and bottled milk during the war at West Wickham. After the end of the war, when the men returned, Rose worked in our Laboratory based at Shirley and finally ended up as a clerk on the closure of our Shirley Processing Centre at the takeover by Express Dairy. Very mixed memories for me as Rose, her lovely Mum and four sisters were part of my growing up." Paul Batchelor remembers "I used to work at Upper Norwood in those tiny little sheds on the milk floats. I remember one of the managers Dickie Herbert and a milkman Freddie Hough." Gipsy Hill Reg: LYP 823. Allan Dawes comments "The location looks like it's outside the Express shop in London Road, Pollards Hill; between Thornton Heath and Norbury. Paul Batchelor comments "The milk floats were very tightly parked in that depot in those sheds. It was very challenging for the milk Lorry drivers to reverse up that alleyway as someone had put a spike into the wall on the entrance so if the lorries got to close to the building it would have ripped out the side of the trailers; I don’t know how they got away with it." 1960's? Uxbridge. Maria Smith comments "Frank Hicks was my grandad, and the boy is my dad, pictured here on his Uxbridge round. They lived in Park Road; sadly he passed away at age 55. I think he was a very popular milkman!" Mike Ash comments "He was our milkman in the 1950's. I remember when he used to take all the Grand National bets, even my Mum would have a bet. It was surprising that he finished his round that day! He was a really nice guy, always friendly. He had a horse pulling the milk float and my dad used to collect the manure for his allotment."
