1980s Newbury milkmen collect £500 for children's charity. David Hawkins comments "I joined Express Dairy Newbury as an apprentice milkman in 1976, spending time in the office/servery/office and a few days at Didcot processing plant. When old enough to drive I started a new round 21 in Thatcham, where they were building the new Whitelands estate, and was there 18 years in the end." Derek Hollis adds "I was the depot manager at Newbury before your time of starting and I was the area manager until 1975 when I moved to North Dorset, still with Express back then. I remember Mick Lovegrove well, he was a foreman at Newbury and took over from me. Mick died quite young unfortunately. Charlie Lovell was in charge of the servery and Harold Few was my assistant manager who I believe has also sadly passed. I was very young in those days to be a manager-just 28 years of age, now a young 83 (in 2026). Very good days." (Courtesy David Hawkins)
