1950's Appleby finished factory. Alan Mandle comments 'The cheese factory was actually built on railway land as a cutting was excavated to join the Settle-Carlisle line with the now obsolete Eden Valley line. However, the two railway companies fell out and the line was never completed. The land was eventually purchased from British Rail sometime in the 80's.'Maureen Ingham comments "My husband Colin Ingham worked in the whey plant"

Starting in 1959 the factory originally produced stirred curd for the manufacture of processed cheese. This was hauled by road to Kraft, Liverpool in 50 gallon drums'

1970's Appleby Whey Processing design by Brian Gray. Alan Mandle comments "Whey was often looked upon as a by-product, used for animal feed by most cheese factories. However, Appleby was unique in having the first demineralisation plant in the UK. This ion-exchange plant produced a whey powder suitable for human consumption and customers included Mars at Slough, Farleys baby powder factory at Kendal, Weetabix Alpen and many more. Because of this added value product, cheesemaking at Appleby was often regarded as a by-product of demineralised whey production, and the factory probably had an extended life span for that reason. The Demin plant was installed in 1974 and a second plant added in 1979 to meet demand. As the diagram shows only one ion-exchange plant I assume it was produced at some time between these dates, or even prior to the first installation." (Courtesy Tim Gray)
