1963 New Electric Milk Float from W&E, Shrewsbury Hilary Mccluskey comments "My family's dairy business was BOWYERS DAIRY at Shirley. We purchased two of these Wales & Edwards milk floats in the same year. They were easy to drive and my Uncle and I drove them to the local weigh bridge for weighing before registration. One had to pass a test to be able to drive them, but the licence issued then enabled you to drive a car - there was obviously a queue from our roundsmen to take the test! The law was later changed. Bowyers’ Dairy sold out to Express Dairy on July 4th 1964 and me along with it! Then followed 30 happy years with Express Dairy and Express Foods. I ended my time working in Ruislip as Express Foods Group Payroll Manager. Hilary Bowyer. (Became McCluskey in 1991).
1965 Lorry Foreman Mr Jack Hickmott, 18 years with Wicken's Dairies, tends a transport fleet largely composed of Thames Traders. Paul Batchelor remembers "When I first went to Primrose & Len in Tonbridge Road the mechanics were Cyril and David and Jim on body repairs. They also looked after Larkfield and Lower Stone Street depots. When those depots closed they looked after the new Aylesford and Parkwood depots. When I first went there it would have been in the 70/ 80s. I worked at the new Aylesford depot for a while installing battery chargers for the floats which were coming in from the old Larkfield depot, just down the road. I also worked at Parkwood depot for a while when Tonbridge Road and Lower Stone Street depots closed and moved into Parkwood. Tonbridge Road later became an Express Orange Juice factory."
