1980 Drama at Exeter when refrigeration plant failed, and superhuman efforts brought the dairy back on line, led by Manager George Streeting with Peter Perry, Ian Price, Peter Evans, Peter Jordan and Phil Howe. Jimmy Reid remembers "On that day, I was walking up the steps to the pasteurising area when I saw Martin Riches (Pasteuriser) and Melvin Walrond (Fitter) running towards me wiping their eyes. As soon as they saw me they said “run”! So I turned around and went back down the stairs. A cloud of ammonia had encircled the pasteurising floor as a result of a leak. Horrible stuff!😵‍💫I was one of the “6 men” that went to Sherborne. They had a different handling system to us and we had to man-handle the 6/7 high stacks of milk bottles onto our 4 stack stillages, which made it easier for handling by fork-lift at the Exeter depot. There was Rod Amos, Bill Shaddick, Bert Baur, myself, plus a few names I can't remember". Martin Evans adds "I went to Thornbury with Tim Pring". (Express News October)
